Hurricane Sandy

So, not terribly much has went on since Saturday night after my previous post. However, this is not entirely a bad thing consider all the rain and wind. On Saturday night, after watching a movie and relaxing for a while, a bunch of us played cards in the common room of Blanche, ground floor until 3:00 or so in the morning. We were playing Uno and changing around the rules periodically to make it more fun. For example, in one round, everyone started with three cards. It actually made it a lot harder because you were so limited early in the game that people had to keep drawing. It was interesting to see how different slight changes in the game made the entire flow of the rounds different.

On Sunday, the weather was okay for the majority of day – it drizzled a few times but overall it was a nice day. It did, however, start to get rainier into the night and also much colder. For the majority of the day, Phil, Dan, Lisa, Stefan, and I relaxed, played video games, and just generally enjoyed ourselves. I did not know Stefan very well, but it has been nice getting to know him better over the span of the weekend while he was visiting friends. Stefan is also a student here, however, he is taking this semester off before returning in the spring. It was also quite amusing to watch all day as people anxiously waited to see if classes were going to be cancelled and the general cheer caused by what is essentially a rain day today. A large number of other schools officially declared that they were closing before us, so I personally just assumed that we would also eventually cancel classes for the day, and eventually the school did make the announcement and people were quite pleased. Apparently, no one felt like braving a hurricane to go to class.

Classes were indeed cancelled today because of the weather caused by Hurricane Sandy. It is definitely not as bad as it could have been, but it is very cold and wet and the wind has spiked throughout the day. Most of today was spent on relaxing with friends because classes were cancelled – for example, Phil, Dan, Lisa, Probie, and I all watched Snow White and the Huntsman early in the evening before braving the weather to determine what dinner would be. I personally stayed in my apartment because I had no interest in being cold and wet outside and I have a kitchen. After dinner, Phil and I sat down to work on homework – and Dan went back to Blanche for the same purpose. Eventually Lisa also rejoined Phil and I, and are now having a small homework party until my conversational hour at 9:00 PM. Once my conversational hour is over, I intend to work on homework for a little longer and then watch movies with Lisa and Phil until the early hours of the morning since classes were already cancelled for tomorrow because of flooding and weather concerns.

Sand(y) Storm

With the hurricane approaching it is interesting to see how a college prepares for such a situation. So far classes have not been cancelled (although we have heard they are in several areas). McDaniel’s news team is live blogging the storm so that students can follow along. There are also posts on facebook updating on the current status of the weather.

One great thing McDaniel has for weather conditions is the news alert. They send a text any time there is something the students should be notified of. This worked well last year when students had a potential tornado warning. All students were contacted swiftly and able to move to a safe location on campus.

Though I was not on campus for the tornado warning I also heard that campus safety officers went through the buildings warning students to find safe shelter. It is reassuring to know that we are looked after in case of emergency. It is debatable what damage the storm will cause, but McDaniel is taking steps to protect the student body. I overheard campus workers discussing preparations for the storm last week, so I know there has been a lot of advanced planning. Though I am hoping for cancelled class, I am not worried for my safety.

Heroes Helping Hopkins

We have reached that particular weekend day of the semester. That day when a car-full of us crazy college kids pack into a car to invade the local grocery store (and get attacked by girl scouts and their cookies), armed only with a list of ingredients needed and our wits about us. Who are these people? What will we do with these groceries? And why didn’t we buy any Girl Scout cookies even though someone was dressed up as a giant monkey and waving at us? The answers to all these questions and more follow…

This group of people is known affectionately (and officially) as Heroes Helping Hopkins, HHH for short. The reason for our list of ingredients and the grocery store invasion was to be able to make a delicious meal of home-baked macaroni and cheese with fresh green beans on the side, apple cider to drink and some delicious dessert known as s’mores bars. Tonight is a Cook Night! Simple put, that means it’s a night when five or so members from the club go down to the Believe in Tomorrow Children’s House to make dinner for families who have a child in Johns Hopkins Hospital. It’s a great little service club on campus that is doing something great and simple to help out families while they’re going through tough times.

Plus, Cook Nights are fun! We have about four a semester because they take quite a bit of work and time, but it’s well worth it. The plan of the evening is for five of us to drive down with all our supplies, which takes about 45 minutes. Once there, we just get to go to and take over the kitchen making dinner and dessert to serve to the families there. Usually we make enough food for about 20 people to eat as whole families are staying in the Children’s House while the child is in Hopkins’ pediatric department.

It’s a really fun time messing around in the kitchen with other college students, creating a delicious meal (that you get to eat with everybody else), and just doing something for somebody else. Looking for a good service club? HHH might be it!

Now I said I’d answer all the questions, but I’ve missed the most important one on giant monkeys and girl scouts. Simply put, I’m not the biggest fan in the world of girl scouts- I’m a make-your-own cookie type of girl, and since I live in a North Village apartment on campus, I can! Hopefully whoever was in the monkey suit didn’t fell too snubbed.

Movie Time

So, I have actually had a really good week. Even though I have been recovering still, I am feeling much better and have been able to be up and about more. Anime Club, which meets on Thursday at 8:00, this week was a lot of fun and we finally decided on our t-shirt designs and most of the club wants to buy one once we order them. We watched our running series as well as two other shows and it was a really nice relaxing way to end my week since I do not have any classes on Friday. All of the officers also went to the Station after the meeting and we got a lot of details worked out for our upcoming auction. It was productive, but there were also several new people at the Station doing Karaoke who were actually really good, so we had a lot of fun.

On Friday, I had some make up work to do, but my evening was spent relaxing with friends. Phil and I went to see The Dark Knight Rises in Decker Auditorium. One nice thing about McDaniel is that they show a relatively new movie on campus at least every other week for free. It is a really nice way to hang out with friends or to spend a date night with your significant other and there were a lot of people at the 7:00 showing last night. Everyone there cheered at the end of the movie because it was really good and they seemed to have a really good time. I really liked the movie and will definitely think about buying it sometime soon.

Today, I spent a lot of the day doing homework, however that is primarily because tonight a bunch of us are going to the Carroll Arts Center to watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show and to hang out. We are going with a very diverse group of friends so it will be interesting to see how everyone likes the movie and how they react to its eccentricities. I am going with Dan, Lisa, Phil, and several other friends – some of them have seen it before and some have not. The Carroll Arts Center shows Rocky Horror once a year and it was a lot of fun last year and I expect it will be just as much fun this time around.

Intramural Sports

McDaniel College is home to 24 Division III athletic sports, all part of the Centennial Conference. But we are also home to 11 intramural sports that I would argue are just as competitive, if not more so.

Several of my friends play on an intramural football team. While they always acted intense about playing time and uniforms for each week, I always took their comments as boys being boys. However, I finally went out to a game this past weekend. They played under the lights and my roommates and I had been promising we’d check it out before the season was over.

I was surprised how how legitimate the game was. Although it was flag football so there was no need for pads or helmets and there was no tackling, the boys all played really intense and followed the rules a lot more closely than I would have guessed.

My roommates and some of the boys are getting a team together for an intramural volleyball tournament on Halloween night. I think that intramural sports are a great way to get active and have fun with friends. And having that intramural champions t-shirt at the end of the season makes you the envy of a lot of people on campus.

There are a lot of intramural sports to check out, including floor hockey, basketball, and softball. So if you’re not ready to commit to a division 3 sport but you’re not ready to give up your high school sports, consider playing intramural and get the best of both worlds.

Taste of Latin America: El Caribe

Last night was the 6th Annual Taste of Latin America dinner, hosted by the Hispano Latino Alliance (HLA) here on campus. Many of my housemates are in HLA, so I went to support all the hard work they’ve been doing on decorating, selling tickets, and working on song and dance performances for after the meal.

When we walked into the dinner, we found that it was decorated like a cruise ship and that buffet tables lined the walls. I could smell foods that reminded my of my time in the Carribean, such as platanos, which are similar to bananas and fried. I was also excited to see that they were serving flan, a sweet dessert made with condensced and evaporated milk.

After eating, we got to watch a video that an HLA member made about growing up in Cuba, a performance of Ojalá que llueva café, and a bachata dance. The song was probably my favorite part; you can check out the original version here!

Events like this might inspire you to spice up your Spanish, even if it’s not the language you’re studying here at school. Here’s a review of some Spanish words that you might need at a restaurant or dinner:

Los cubiertos- Silverware

Plato- Plate

Tazón- Bowl

Aperitivo- Appetizer

El plato principal- Main course

Postre- Dessert

Quisiera ____- I would like _____

Fundraising at it’s Finest!

This week, we had a fundraiser for the 10th Anniversary of The Vagina Monologues.  The show is done as a fundraiser itself, since all of the profits are donated: 10% goes to V-Day, 45% goes to Rape Crisis Intervention Services of Carroll County, and 45% goes to Family and Children’s Services of Central Maryland.  As the co-director of this year’s production, it is my responsibility, along with my co-director, Whitney, to come up with fundraising ideas that will help us fund the cost of the show.  We decided that in addition to doing the traditional raffle that is done every year, we would do a “Pie in the Face” fundraiser.  We gathered six administrators on campus that would be willing to get pied in the face.  We asked students, faculty, and staff to donate to whoever they would like to see get pied in the face. The person who raises the most amount of money will get a pie in the face, and the person who raises the second most amount of money will get a cupcake in the face.  We will be pieing the winners in the face on Tuesday!

As we were sitting outside Glar (the dining hall) asking people for donations, people were laughing like crazy.  Some people also responded with “That’s mean…” but once we reassured them that it was for charity and that everyone agreed, they donated!  Between the raffle and the money we collected for the pieing in the face, we raised enough money to cover some of the t-shirt costs for the show! Whitney and I were very proud of our fundraiser and the amount of money we raised!  Not only did we raise money, it got the word out about Vagina Monologues, which was really our main goal.  We’re so excited to put on this show in February and make all of the past directors proud!

Ice Skating Fridays

My friends and I have a new awesome tradition: Ice skating every Friday! I grew up in New England, skating on frozen ponds and rivers every winter with my family. Skating outdoors is the best. I have fond memories of shoveling p ice rinks and playing pick up hockey with my dad and brother, or smashing thie ice and trying to ice-fish with my sister. One of the things I miss most when I’m at school is winter sports, but skating every Friday is helping fill that hole.

It all started when one of my friends, who is from Texas, said she wanted to go skating because she’s going to school in the “north.” Now, despite the fact that McDaniel is as far from the north as Hurricane Sandy was from being dry, I agreed that skating was an awesome idea. Another friend said that he played hockey when he was younger and he’d love to as well. All of a sudden, we were going to the Reisterstown Sports Complex and we were skating!

Skating has been awesome. So far, we’ve had 9 different people go, worn 2 Halloween costumes, met 1 hockey prodigy, taught 2 friends how to skate, and only taken 1 girl to the hospital! It has been great to get the extra exercise and to prepare myself for winter break (so as not to be embarrassed by my sisters).

I went today dressed as Where’s Waldo. When I stepped on the ice, every preteen at the rink (maybe 200) started screaming at once. They were so excited to see someone dressed up that they couldn’t contain themselves. At first the attention was nice, but eventually it did get pretty annoying eventually. In the end I let some kids borrow my hat and glasses, and we had a great time skating around and around and around.

Fall Conference with Intervarsity

Hello again! This past weekend, as I said, I went on the trip with Intervarsity to Fall Conference. It’s just a weekend event that was held at River Valley Ranch, which is about half an hour from here, and there were a lot of different activities. If you are interested in Intervarsity or maybe you are not completely sure about it, this weekend was a lot of fun and it definitely made me feel more a part of this group than before. Honestly, I would recommend giving Intervarsity the chance and becoming at least a part of it, if you are Christian. It is nondenominational, so you do not have to worry about being Episcopalian, Catholic, or any other denomination (because really, there is a heck of a lot).

During the weekend, we did have a schedule, but don’t let that discourage you! There is free time and there was a lot on Saturday. We did have early mornings, but thankfully we left around 12:00, so there was time on Sunday for a nap and doing homework. Basically, Friday we settled in to our campsite and had dinner after we arrived. Then we had worship, which is with music, and a speaker session. This year Michael Koh was the speaker and he discussed a lot about faith and how it can heal lives. That was followed by campus time, which we spent playing the game “Never have I ever” with a circle of chairs. Someone stands in the middle and says something that they have never done and if you have done it, then you have to run for another chair, but if you don’t get a seat, you get to stand in the middle and say something that you have never done. It was a lot of fun. Then we had free time, which people could spend in the gym, playing soccer or basketball, or playing different games, especially card games. I ended up playing soccer, until someone was injured and then we played the card game “Drug Dealer,” which I have to admit is one of the funniest and most awkward games I have ever played. The next day was breakfast, a speaker session, worship, lunch, free time (I went with my friends to a corn maize, which was a lot of fun) , and seminars (they had five choices for which seminar to attend). Then Sunday was a little depressing because most of us had so much fun there that we didn’t want to leave and go back to our homework.

So, this past weekend was a lot of fun because I went on that trip. If you ever consider going to Fall Conference, I would recommend going. They do offer scholarships if it is unaffordable, but it is a little over a hundred dollars. I was able to get a scholarship to go, thankfully. Thank you  for reading once again!

Ghosts

Tonight I went on a tour of campus, but not the sort of tour that you’ll go on with student ambassadors from the admissions office. Instead, this tour was a ghost tour of McDaniel, and I really enjoyed it.

When I heard that Alpha Psi Omega, the National Theater Honor Society on campus, was putting on ghost tours last night and tonight, I knew I had to go, especially since I enjoyed the ghost tour I took of Westminster last month (which I wrote about here). Though urban legends and folklore exist on campus, I’d never really heard any of these stories and wanted to learn about them.

Tonight was a perfect night for a ghost tour too. It was pleasantly warm outside, which isn’t so spooky, but the fogginess of the night contributed to an ideal atmosphere. Our tour was led by two theater students who were very familiar with the stories and even claim to have experienced paranormal activities themselves. Theater majors supposedly encounter ghosts a lot, since the theater boasts three ghosts. They think their ghosts are pretty friendly though, especially one named Harvey, who watches out for crew members when they do lighting and likes to watch rehearsals.

A lot of the stories that have been passed down over the years seem a little outlandish, and I’m a little skeptical about them. I think I’m going to have to do a little research to see how these legends originated. Still, I found the stories to be really interesting, and going on the tour was a great way to spend part of my evening.

And don’t worry–chances are, you’ll never encounter a ghost on campus. Unless you look for them…
