Off-campus coffee and tea

While it’s tempting to cuddle up in bed and try to hibernate until April on chilly days like the ones we’ve been having, winter weather also provides the opportunity to grab a friend or a book and head to one of Westminster’s local coffee shops. A few of my favorites that are within walking distance from campus include:

Cup Tea Bar and Cafe. This is my favorite spot to grab a drink in town, and they recently moved to a bigger venue and expanded their menu. They have tons of loose teas, smoothies, coffee, and lattes. They change their teas seasonally, and they always have a few teas to sample for those who might be indecisive about what to get. My favorite drink that I got recently was a salted caramel tea latte.  If you’re feeling hungry, they also serve breakfast and lunch foods, such as sandwiches, salads, and soup made fresh daily.

Birdies. The best drink here is definitely the snowbird, which is an ice blended coffee drink in flavors such as mocha and caramel. They also have loose teas, espresso, chai, and other drinks. My favorite thing to do here is check out the jewelry made by local artists for purchase in the shop. They also have board games, so it’s a great place to head for the afternoon with a friend.

Furnace Hills. If you’d like to pick up some coffee to take back to your dorm, this is the best place in town to go. Their website boasts that they sell “coffee with a cause”;  a portion of many of their blends goes to supporting an organization called Mission to Ukraine, which supports a Ukrainian orphanage. Furnace Hills is also committed to providing jobs for people with disabilities. Their shop is only a block or so from campus, so it is super easy to stop in, sample some of their blends, and pick up a bag to take home.

Even though we’re due for a few more storms this winter, it’s easy to stay warm in the Westminster area by heading to one of our local shops for a hot drink!
