Green Terror Baseball

Baseball is undoubtedly my favorite sport, so of course I am a fan of the McDaniel Green Terror baseball team. Like the 22 other sports here, we compete in Division III in the Centennial Conference. Not does this conference denote teams that are all 100 years old and older, it is also the third smartest conference in the nation behind the Ivy and Patriot Leagues.

Saturday was the first home game of the season for the boys and the weather was perfect for it. They played a double header against Penn State York.

My roommates (equally as large baseball fans) and I supported the team all afternoon, cheering on our friends and boyfriends. Not only is the baseball fun to watch, but it is a great social event as many students choose to hang out by the field and root for the Green Terror as well. It was also fun to see the new freshmen doing well on the team.

The boys had a great first showing, sweeping Penn State York and making the sunny Saturday a great almost-Spring day.

McDaniel does social media

When you become a member of the McDaniel community, you’ll quickly learn that McDaniel College has a much bigger presence on social media than you might think. McDaniel has dozens of Facebook pages and Twitters associated with its various departments and organizations.

Here are some of the most interesting:

1. McDaniel College / @McDaniel College

These pages are the official McDaniel College pages. Here you’ll find the College’s biggest news stories and other important or exciting announcements. So much goes on at McDaniel that without the content posted by these pages, there would be so much I didn’t know about McDaniel!

2. McDaniel Free Press / @mcdfreepress

You could say that the Free Press Facebook and Twitter are like a one-stop shop for all of the McDaniel and local news relevant to students. In addition to linking to their own stories, they share stories published by the College and local newspapers such as the Carroll County Times. They also retweet a lot of interesting and important things from other McDaniel Twitters.

3. McDaniel College Department of Campus Safety / @McDanielDoCS

It may seem boring at first to follow Campus Safety on Facebook and Twitter, but these guys use social media quite well. The weather updates and safety tips they post are pretty useful and helps show that Campus Safety really cares about us. Their Facebook page in particular is great because it shows a fun and human side to our Campus Safety officers.

4. McDaniel Athletics / @mcdanielsports

If you like sports, the McDaniel Athletics pages are for you! Get all the latest updates on Green Terror wins and our awesome student athletes! I think all of the individual sports have their own pages too, so if you’re only really interested in following swimming, for example, you’re covered!

5. Roger Casey / @DRROG

Our college president, Dr. Roger Casey, is the only thing on this list that you can’t ‘like’ on Facebook, but he would probably be flattered if you could. Instead, you can subscribe to him or even become his Facebook friend–and I’ve heard that if you become his friend, he’ll post on your wall on your birthday. Dr. Casey, or Dr. Rog as he likes to call himself is a pretty funny guy and he posts some interesting commentary. I definitely enjoy following him!

Tailgating

Everyone thinks they understand tailgating. But do you understand McDaniel tailgating? As one of the last bowl shaped stadiums on the east coast, McDaniel tailgating is unique. Students, parents, alumni, and the community gather for not only football games, but for field hockey and lacrosse games too. Everyone fights for a prime position to park their car, set up their tent, and cookout. Organizations and Greek life paint their symbols and letters on the field to denote their specified areas. All of the fans in McDaniel gear wander from area to area, playing corn hole and sharing on the good times. The best are the Saturdays when almost all fall sports teams have home games. You can wander from facility to facility cheering on the McDaniel student-athletes, enjoying the weather.

The experience is definitely something that you need to see for yourself. If a school with just 1,700 undergraduates can draw crowds of up to 12,000, we must be doing something right. We were also voted by the Weather Channel as the number 6 tailgating school in the nation – a list mainly made up of all large southern state schools. A new stadium is going to be completed and dedicated in time for homecoming on November 3 and will feature concessions, bathrooms, and training facilities inside.

Unfortunately, the football team only has four games this year, so plan your visits accordingly! You definitely don’t want to miss tailgating on the Hill!
