Volunteering and Bingo fun

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is one of the few holidays McDaniel students get off from class (though if you’re not on campus doing a Jan Term, you’re off for the day anyway since you’re still on winter break).

Though I had off from class today, I decided to make today a “day on” by volunteering on campus for our annual MLK Day festivities. For four years now, McDaniel, along with the local Carroll Community College, has hosted a service-learning event for elementary, middle, and high school students on MLK Day. I volunteered last year for it and enjoyed it, so I thought I would volunteer again!

The day included a couple of guest speakers, a talented high school jazz band, lunch in Glar, and a streaming of the inauguration. My favorite part of the day was card making. I got to supervise elementary and middle school kids as they made and decorated cards to benefit members of a local senior center, and I got to make plenty of cheerful cards too.

I had a great time volunteering, but it left me exhausted! I took an unnecessarily long nap before going to dinner, and a couple hours later, I was off to my next exciting activity of the day: Bingo!

If there’s piece of universal advice for college students I can give, it’s to play Bingo whenever it’s offered. Playing Bingo on a college campus is a fun way to be social, but more awesomely, there’s prizes. Awesome prizes. Awesome prizes worth a lot of money prizes. (Like gift cards!)

The last time I played Bingo at McDaniel was in August, and I was very lucky to win a $100 gift card. Which is why I was stunned that tonight, in the eighth and final round of Bingo, I did it again! I couldn’t believe it, but I was also very happy! Several other people were only one space away from a full Bingo card, but with pure chance, I managed to be the lucky winner.

So as you can imagine, I had a pretty fantastic day!

Halloween Bingo!

I once thought that bingo playing could be lumped into the same realm as knitting, but as a college student with about $22 to my name the idea of winning prizes just for listening to someone call out numbers and marking them on my card is incredibly enticing. Therefore, when I read about last night’s Halloween bingo, I was amped to go.

Local vendors such as The Pottery Loft, a paint your own pottery studio, donated over 40 prizes for the event. Luckily, there were only about 30 people in attendance, so almost everyone won something! I won both a coffee mug and a baseball cap. My friend who had never won bingo before won four times, including a $10 Barnes and Noble gift card!

Besides the free stuff, I was eager to attend because the event was student-organized and sponsored by APO, one of our service fraternities, The Animal Welfare Club, and The Puppy Club, an organization that trains seeing-eye dogs. All of the proceeds benefitted The Humane Society, which will definitely need the donations after Hurricane Sandy. The presidents of each organization that contributed to the bingo said a few words during a break, and it made me really proud to see that different student organizations had reached out to each other in order to support a common and worthy cause.

Last night was a prime example of why I feel that no student could ever get bored at McDaniel. First of all, there are events every night, either organized by students or The Office of Student Engagement. Additionally, the wide range of clubs and organizations on campus, like the Puppy Club or Animal Welfare Club, offers students a chance to get involved and meet others with common interests.

Sophomore Year, Day One

Sometimes rain happens for a reason. Today, Sunday, one of the major highlights of my day was supposed to be the annual Honors picnic, an event that helps freshmen Honors students meet upperclassmen Honors students. Unfortunately, though, the picnic was rained out.

To compensate for this, I staged a “picnic” in my common room; I spread out a blanket on the floor of my common room, brought out some snacks I was willing to share, and invited my suitemates to join me. It was a little awkward, since not a lot of my suitemates showed up at first and we’re still getting to know each other, but I enjoyed it, especially since one of my suitemates microwaved s’mores for us.

Still, I was disappointed that I would not be able to enjoy a delicious, freshly-grilled burger at the picnic, but then I realized that because the picnic was cancelled, I could go to Glar for dinner and play bingo in the Office of Student Engagement’s annual Bingo for Books event. I almost didn’t play when I got to Glar because I wanted to eat quickly and return to my room to sleep and unpack some more, but I decided that I really shouldn’t miss out on an opportunity to win money for books and other expenditures. So I got some bingo cards, found a table of friends, and started playing after I ate my meal. After several rounds, I got very luck y and won a $100 Visa gift card! Thank goodness for rain, good fortune, and the very good choice to play.

Speaking of choices, early in the afternoon, I met up with a number of my Honors friends and attended a showing of “Choices” for upperclassmen. “Choices” is a McDaniel tradition for freshmen that takes place the evening of the last night of orientation. According to tradition, I (nor anyone else), am not supposed to tell you what exactly “Choices” is, but I can tell you that it’s hands down one of the best events that takes place during orientation, and though it’s mandatory, skipping out on it is a really poor choice. I definitely enjoyed this year’s “Choices” quite a lot!

Otherwise, my day was pretty low-key. I spent more time unpacking (which I’m nowhere near finished) and also started to hang up my posters and wall decorations to make my room start to feel like home. Class starts tomorrow, and though I’m excited, I’m not ready! I’m still trying to settle in! But nevertheless, I think tomorrow’s going to be a pretty good day.
