McDaniel does social media

When you become a member of the McDaniel community, you’ll quickly learn that McDaniel College has a much bigger presence on social media than you might think. McDaniel has dozens of Facebook pages and Twitters associated with its various departments and organizations.

Here are some of the most interesting:

1. McDaniel College / @McDaniel College

These pages are the official McDaniel College pages. Here you’ll find the College’s biggest news stories and other important or exciting announcements. So much goes on at McDaniel that without the content posted by these pages, there would be so much I didn’t know about McDaniel!

2. McDaniel Free Press / @mcdfreepress

You could say that the Free Press Facebook and Twitter are like a one-stop shop for all of the McDaniel and local news relevant to students. In addition to linking to their own stories, they share stories published by the College and local newspapers such as the Carroll County Times. They also retweet a lot of interesting and important things from other McDaniel Twitters.

3. McDaniel College Department of Campus Safety / @McDanielDoCS

It may seem boring at first to follow Campus Safety on Facebook and Twitter, but these guys use social media quite well. The weather updates and safety tips they post are pretty useful and helps show that Campus Safety really cares about us. Their Facebook page in particular is great because it shows a fun and human side to our Campus Safety officers.

4. McDaniel Athletics / @mcdanielsports

If you like sports, the McDaniel Athletics pages are for you! Get all the latest updates on Green Terror wins and our awesome student athletes! I think all of the individual sports have their own pages too, so if you’re only really interested in following swimming, for example, you’re covered!

5. Roger Casey / @DRROG

Our college president, Dr. Roger Casey, is the only thing on this list that you can’t ‘like’ on Facebook, but he would probably be flattered if you could. Instead, you can subscribe to him or even become his Facebook friend–and I’ve heard that if you become his friend, he’ll post on your wall on your birthday. Dr. Casey, or Dr. Rog as he likes to call himself is a pretty funny guy and he posts some interesting commentary. I definitely enjoy following him!

Dinner at McDaniel’s Own White House

Last week, I was invited to go to dinner at the President’s House, along with the other tour guides.  This was my second time having dinner at the President’s House and I was very excited to go!  Dr. Roger Casey, our President, and his wife Robyn were super welcoming to all of us!  Their house was decorated for Christmas, complete with a really pretty Christmas tree in their front window.  They were very excited to show off their tree,  because this was one of very few years where they actually put one up.  Considering they used to live in Florida, they said it was always difficult to get into the Christmas spirit when it was so warm outside.  They also usually travel during the Christmas season, so they don’t usually decorate.

It was a fun night to relax during the last week of classes with good food and good company. It’s rare that all of the tour guides sit in a room together and talk, since we all work during different times of the week. I enjoyed spending time talking to all of the tour guides, about random things on campus, classes, clubs, and funny things that we have encountered on tours. During dinner, we were split up into two tables, since there were too many of us to fit around one table.  Our table sat in the dining room, and we got to talk to Robyn while we ate.  She told us about some of her experiences since she has been on campus and about some of the traveling that she and Dr. Casey have done, especially during the Christmas season.  When we took a break before dessert, Robyn and Dr. Casey switched tables.  Dr. Casey talked to us a lot about things going on around campus, and allowed us to ask him questions about different things.  We were given the inside scoop on new developments on campus, which was very exciting, even though much of it will not happen until after I graduate.  The food was also very delicious!  We had  Mexican food, complete with Mexican salad, rice, enchiladas, and tortilla chips.  For dessert, little glasses filled with crushed candy canes, chocolate chips, whipped cream, marshmallows, and cinnamon were brought out.  We were all intrigued by it, since we didn’t know what else to expect, but then we all got hot chocolate!  I’ve never seen a condiment bar for hot chocolate before!  We also had warm churros with vanilla ice cream, which all made for a very yummy dessert!  I was so full when I left the table!  Of course, after dinner, we all gathered back in the living room for more conversation.

Overall, it was a very fun and informative night.  I’m very glad that I got to go to dinner at the President’s House again before I graduated!

Keeping the Fun Alive

Things tend to get hectic in the days leading up to Thanksgiving through the rest of the semester. In fact, you could say that Thanksgiving is like the eye of a storm–a calm in the middle surrounded by chaos.

Despite the fact that the end of the semester is typically a stressful time (as I’m sure you can imagine), it’s important to continue to take some time for yourself to relax, do fun things, and spend time with friends.

The fun in my life has definitely been kept alive this week, particularly yesterday when we had our annual Thanksgiving lunch in Glar. Thanksgiving lunch is one of my favorite meals of the year. Turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes and other delicious food is served buffet style, and for dessert, they’re all sorts of pie, cake, and cheesecake to choose from. Glar is packed with students, faculty, and staff looking to unwind and have a nice meal. This coming together and festivity makes me feel all warm and happy inside. I can’t wait to do it all over again in a few weeks when we have our annual holiday lunch.

There must have been pie left over from lunch because in the afternoon, Dr. Roger Casey, our college president, got pied in the face (twice!). In actuality, he got pied because his name raised the most money in a fundraiser for the Vagina Monologues, in which students and other members of the college community donated money into bags with the names of members of our administration. The person whose bag received the most money got pied. Our Dean of Student Affairs also got a cupcake to the face for coming in second place. Both she and Dr. Casey were really got sports about it, and it was for a great cause. Dr. Casey even seemed to enjoy it and said that the coconut cream pie tasted good.

I’ll continue to make sure I enjoy myself over the next few days. Eventually, some of my friends will come over tonight and we’ll probably watch Monty Python’s Flying Circus or something else silly. We might also watch some Star Wars this weekend too, since we watched the prequel trilogy last weekend. But I won’t let the Star Wars conflict with going to see Danger Sauce, McDaniel’s improv troupe on Saturday night. Members of Gettysburg College’s improv troupe are also coming to do the show with them, and the proceeds of this show will go to charity. I’m interested in seeing how the two troupes interact and perform with each other, and I’m glad this event will be fun for all for a good cause!

Raffles, Penny Wars, and Pies

Fundraising is a huge thing for clubs and organizations on campus. Everyday you walk by Glar, there’s always at least one group fundraising for this cause or that. This week, both groups I am a member of had fundraisers going on. Gamma Sig did a Penny Wars and pitted the classes against each other to raise money for one of our National Service Partners, Alex’s Lemonade Stand. I had the privilege of sitting at the table harassing people to put silver coins in the Senior’s bucket. The competition got very heated and the Freshman ended up winning. The snuck past everyone else, which just isn’t fair. We plan to combine the money we made there with the money we will make from the lemonade stand at Service Day this coming weekend and give one big donation to the organization.

Vagina Monologues also had a fundraiser going in front of Glar to raise money for the actual cost of our show in February. We had a few raffle baskets and gift cards donated by places, people and companies all over town that we raffled off all week. Also at the table we had a race going between Dr. Casey and a few other higher-up on campus. People were to donate spare change to the person they wanted to see get pied in the face. Dr. Casey, Dean Gerl, Dean Towle, Michael Robbins and Christine Workman all got very into the competition between each other. All together the fundraiser made over $200! Dr. Casey alone raised over $90. Yes, he was the one to get pied in the face. Because of Hurricane Sandy, we had to push back the actual pieing till the week after next to accommodate Dr. Casey’s schedule, but it will all be worth it.

I love participating in fundraisers on campus. As organization leaders, we all understand how difficult it is to get people to care about causes or to shell out some money to support the causes. Since we’re such a small school, it’s even harder because most of us are involved with multiple organizations and we are all still college kids on a college budget. So instead of giving up we find creative and fun ways to raise money. I mean, what other college president would allow the students to pie him in the face for charity? I love the opportunities these organizations give us. It helps us feel like we are doing our part to make this world a better place.
