Pumping Iron…No but Really…

One of the best things you can do for yourself while you’re at McDaniel is go to the gym. College in general is not that healthy. In general it entails staying up late working on assignments, eating while you’re doing it, spending copious amounts of time sitting doing work, and let’s face it–glar isn’t all that healthy either. So with the help of donations from the Merritt family, the same Merritt family whose name appears on many fitness centers in the area and most recently on what used to be Academic Hall after yet another generous donation to the school, the school has provided a fantastic fitness center.

I find it best to use the gym between 2 and 4pm on most days. Sports teams usually take over the gym from about 4 to 5:30 on weekdays, so for a nice uninterrupted workout I prefer the earlier hours. Plenty of people choose to use the gym around 8 or 9 though and since the gym stays open until 11 most nights pretty much anyone can find their perfect time to exercise using state-of-the-art equipment that was almost entirely donated to the school by the Ravens when they used to hold their summer practices here.

What I like most about the gym is its relaxed atmosphere, which is aided by the way it’s set up. The cardio and body weight based workout equipment, like medicine balls and yoga mats, are located on the second floor above the weight machines and free weights, so those less inclined to “pump iron” and simply do push ups or crunches are free to do so without feeling intimidated by the muscle meat heads. Oh, and the muscle meat heads are anything but; they actually are probably the least intimidating people in the world. Just the other day I was struggling to finish my last set and one random soccer player came up behind me and coached me through it, helping on the last few inches. I was struggling with a 150 pound bench but he didn’t judge me, so that speaks nicely to the community established at the gym.

Though it may not be the best part of the day, or even a huge part of your life at McDaniel, the gym is absolutely a wonderful part of the many things that McDaniel has to offer. Whether you’re training for a marathon, getting in shape for your sport, or just purely trying to stay healthy and keep your body in peak shape for summer, the gym has what you need. Plus there’s no sense in passing up a free workout!

Avoiding the muffin top

Now that we’re getting into the second week of school, I’ve already noticed a significant drop in numbers at the gym. Resolutions fade, the wind is blowing, and bed is warm. I get it.

In order to combat my natural urge to hibernate starting around Thanksgiving and ending when I can wear short sleeves, I put myself in a position where I absolutely can’t skip working out. For me, this position is the track team. I go because I love my teammates, want to stay in shape for cross country, and know that I will be held accountable if I don’t show up.

There are some people who have the dedication and drive to roll out of bed each morning, do a self-designed work out, and get great results. I admire those people deeply, but I am not one of them. If you’re like me, the key to maintaining fitness lies in finding what you love to do and finding a community of people who share that love.

Besides organized sports teams, you can find this community through intramurals and classes at the gym. Intramurals are offered year round, and I know from running by heated debates on the intramural soccer field that they take it pretty seriously. Additionally, there are all sorts of night classes offered through the gym that can help you add some regularity to your workout schedule. While some staples include Zumba and Body Combat, this semester a kickboxing night class and yoga class will be offered. Such activities require a fee, but it is much less than what you would pay at a typical gym.

Also, let’s not forget gym classes! We are required to participate in four gyms throughout our time at McDaniel, but I have friends that sign up for four per semester. What better way to hold yourself accountable for working out than to work out for a grade, right?

None of us want to watch a muffin top sag over our jeans as the semester unfolds. If you’re in an exercise lull, consider the various ways to get involved with an existing community of people like yourself. When you know that you’re going to see friends and improve your fitness, you have every reason to get out of bed and make that trek to practice, to the gym, or to the field.

Fitness on Campus

While the Freshman 15 can be a reality for many incoming freshmen (and continues to be a struggle for many upperclassmen) it is easy to stay fit at McDaniel.

One of the perks of being a student is a free gym membership. The fitness center is state of the art and was built to accommodate the Baltimore Ravens when they used McDaniel as their summer training camp. The gym is open everyday with very flexible, student-friendly hours. It is never more than a five minute walk from your dorm on campus. And the campus is full of friendly people who would love to be your gym partner.

The bottom floor holds free weights and weighted machines. The top floor holds a variety of cardio equipment, large flat screen TVs to keep you occupied, and an open mat area.

There are also a plethora of gym classes a student can register to take at the beginning of the semester. These classes are low-commitment (only for 1/3 of the semester) and lots of fun. You could choose to take canoeing, hip-hop dance, kickboxing, or golf to name a few options.

The campus also hosts body combat and Zumba classes for a small fee.

There are so many ways to get active and working out is a great stress reliever, so there is no reason not to work up a sweat around here!

My 5 Favorite Changes on Campus

Every year I return to campus I am greeted with the familiarity of McDaniel College. However, there are always little improvements that make campus even better. This is my list of 5 of my favorite changes on campus this semester.

One Card

Upon starting the new school year, students were required to either get a new student ID or have their old card recoded. This new code allows students to log in online and have the ability to view their meal plan, declining balance, and miscellaneous other things, like gym trips. You can even chose to get notifications about when your balance is low or set a monthly deposit of money onto the card. It’s really convenient!

Convenience store

While replacing the Budapest Café with a brand new Green and Go convenience store has some students a little sour, I think the store is a great idea. Not only does it have quick grab and go food options like salads, sandwiches, and wraps, but it has a variety of snacks and granola bars. There is a milkshake-maker machine as well. The coolest part is it even has foods that you would normally need to leave campus to buy, such as eggs, milk, and fruits and vegetables. They don’t call it a convenience store for nothing!

New shuttle stops and hours

The shuttle was already awesome because it is free transportation for students. However, they recently expanded their list of stops to include Shady Grove, the metro stop that leads into DC. The shuttle continues to stop at Owings Mills, the metro stop for Baltimore, as well as all around Westminster. On top of these new stops, there are also expanded hours. The shuttle runs as late as 2 am on the weekends!

Expanded gym hours

The gym has always had really flexible hours, whether you enjoy working out really early in the morning or later at night. Recently they have expanded the hours so that the gym remains open later on Friday nights and opens earlier on Saturdays and Sundays. I like having the extra options because it means no excuses to get a workout in. And did I mention the gym is free to all McDaniel students?

24 hour library

Although this hasn’t officially happened yet, Hoover Library is set to have two 24-hour floors either by the end of the semester or by the beginning of spring semester. While they have always expanded their hours during important weeks, such as finals, having this 24-hour option is definitely going to be a great addition to campus.
