Get Your Pancakes!

This weekend I helped establish and run the first Alpha Sigma Phi pancake sale we have ever had. Taking the idea from Res Life (Residence Life) and their pancake sale last semester, we thought that it might be a good way to make some money as well as get our name out in terms of recruitment. My brother Logan, recruitment chair, and I teamed up to get the ball rolling and through the support of the rest of the fraternity, we were somewhat successful.

The sale was saturday night. I had spent a good portion of time Friday and Saturday during the day making flyers with tear-off numbers that residents of Rouzer, McDaniel, ANW, and DMC (we focused on these residence halls since we figured these building would be most likely to have guys that would want to go Greek and still have time to pledge) could take with them in the event that they had nowhere to write the number down when they saw the flyer, which is usually the case. Students could call in to the number, place an order (two pancakes for $1 = an order), and we would make the pancakes fresh and deliver them to their dorms.

The night started off really strong. We were getting calls right at 10pm when it started, but these were mostly close friends who we had personally demanded call in to the event. We passed the time playing catch phrase, watching family guy, and in general just having a great time. After about 2 hours, we had given up hope, then around midnight the calls starting flowing in one right after another as people were returning from their night’s activities and getting hungry.

All things said and done, we made about $28 over what we spent on the mix and the plates. Not a huge profit but we succeeded in getting the name of our fraternity out around campus and in some great brotherhood bonding among the guys who were there which is sometimes undervalued. Hopefully we’ll make our pancake sale a more regular thing and it will grow in popularity but for now it’s a great memory!

Keeping the Fun Alive

Things tend to get hectic in the days leading up to Thanksgiving through the rest of the semester. In fact, you could say that Thanksgiving is like the eye of a storm–a calm in the middle surrounded by chaos.

Despite the fact that the end of the semester is typically a stressful time (as I’m sure you can imagine), it’s important to continue to take some time for yourself to relax, do fun things, and spend time with friends.

The fun in my life has definitely been kept alive this week, particularly yesterday when we had our annual Thanksgiving lunch in Glar. Thanksgiving lunch is one of my favorite meals of the year. Turkey and stuffing and mashed potatoes and other delicious food is served buffet style, and for dessert, they’re all sorts of pie, cake, and cheesecake to choose from. Glar is packed with students, faculty, and staff looking to unwind and have a nice meal. This coming together and festivity makes me feel all warm and happy inside. I can’t wait to do it all over again in a few weeks when we have our annual holiday lunch.

There must have been pie left over from lunch because in the afternoon, Dr. Roger Casey, our college president, got pied in the face (twice!). In actuality, he got pied because his name raised the most money in a fundraiser for the Vagina Monologues, in which students and other members of the college community donated money into bags with the names of members of our administration. The person whose bag received the most money got pied. Our Dean of Student Affairs also got a cupcake to the face for coming in second place. Both she and Dr. Casey were really got sports about it, and it was for a great cause. Dr. Casey even seemed to enjoy it and said that the coconut cream pie tasted good.

I’ll continue to make sure I enjoy myself over the next few days. Eventually, some of my friends will come over tonight and we’ll probably watch Monty Python’s Flying Circus or something else silly. We might also watch some Star Wars this weekend too, since we watched the prequel trilogy last weekend. But I won’t let the Star Wars conflict with going to see Danger Sauce, McDaniel’s improv troupe on Saturday night. Members of Gettysburg College’s improv troupe are also coming to do the show with them, and the proceeds of this show will go to charity. I’m interested in seeing how the two troupes interact and perform with each other, and I’m glad this event will be fun for all for a good cause!

Rainy Days and Fun Ways to Spend Them

When it rains on the Hill, it pours. (At least today it did.) If you’ve ever wanted to own a pair of rain boots, I’d have to say that college is the best time of your life to do so. Unlike at a typical high school, you’ll have to do a lot of walking outside to get from place to place and class to class, and rain boots can be a very fun way to dress for the weather and stay dry.

Of course, rain boots aren’t the only fun things you should think about bringing to college. A big part of being successful in college is being able to find a balance between work and play. There are plenty of things you can bring to help you meet new people and make McDaniel seem more like home.

Board games are an obvious thing you might want to bring. They’re perfect for when you have free time on a rainy day like today or for when you want to have some low-key fun on the weekends. I highly recommend bringing Apples to Apples or finding someone who has it. Not only is it a lot of fun and full of laughs, but it’s a great way to help you get to know people. I was also recently introduced to a really silly and quick card game called We Didn’t Playtest This at All.

You’ll probably also want to bring some of your favorite movies, be they DVDs or your copy of The Lion King that you still have on videocassette. (Don’t forget to bring your VCR if you go that route though.) Watching movies by yourself can be a great way to unwind, but consider adding to the fun by inviting your friends to watch with you!

Likewise, some of your favorite books are also a great thing to take with you to college. Don’t be shy to bring some favorite picture books along too. You’d be surprised by how much fun it can be to do a reading of a picture book in a college dorm. Though not actually a children’s book, I did a read-aloud of the hilarious and illustrated All My Friends Are Dead at the beginning of my freshman year last year. Ironically enough, reading this book helped me make friends.

If you’re into crafts, bring your craft supplies and invite your friends to craft with you! Construction paper, for example, is not only great for class projects but you can use it to make signs, posters, cards, and even paper chains. It’s actually something I use all the time, and last week, I made paper snowflake-type things to decorate the area next to my suite’s common room. Also, one of my favorite ways to exercise my creative side is to get magazines from the Free Stuff Shelf by our campus post office and make collages for my dorm room. Don’t forget to bring markers or colored pencils—they’ll also come in handy. You might even want to consider bringing a coloring book or two. Believe it or not, there are plenty of college students who enjoy coloring.

You may not want to do this when it rains, but if you like being outdoors, bring a beach ball, a football, or a Frisbee to toss around. You’ll definitely want friends for these activities! Also, picnic blankets are a must for lounging around outside or even doing homework outdoors. They’re also great to have for the outdoor movie screenings we have on campus a couple times a year.

Bring pretty much whatever you think is fun, so long as it’s easy to fit in a shared space, harmless, and is not against the rules of course! For example, I added some fun to my freezer this year by buying a fish-shaped ice cube tray from IKEA and getting some popsicle molds, which makes it fun to get some fruit juice into my system. (I also want to try making iced coffee popsicles at some point.) However, this year’s award for the most random fun thing I brought to college with me this year goes to my disco ball, which hangs proudly in my suite’s common room.

It will be your college experience. Make it fun!
