Green Terror Baseball

Baseball is undoubtedly my favorite sport, so of course I am a fan of the McDaniel Green Terror baseball team. Like the 22 other sports here, we compete in Division III in the Centennial Conference. Not does this conference denote teams that are all 100 years old and older, it is also the third smartest conference in the nation behind the Ivy and Patriot Leagues.

Saturday was the first home game of the season for the boys and the weather was perfect for it. They played a double header against Penn State York.

My roommates (equally as large baseball fans) and I supported the team all afternoon, cheering on our friends and boyfriends. Not only is the baseball fun to watch, but it is a great social event as many students choose to hang out by the field and root for the Green Terror as well. It was also fun to see the new freshmen doing well on the team.

The boys had a great first showing, sweeping Penn State York and making the sunny Saturday a great almost-Spring day.

McDaniel does social media

When you become a member of the McDaniel community, you’ll quickly learn that McDaniel College has a much bigger presence on social media than you might think. McDaniel has dozens of Facebook pages and Twitters associated with its various departments and organizations.

Here are some of the most interesting:

1. McDaniel College / @McDaniel College

These pages are the official McDaniel College pages. Here you’ll find the College’s biggest news stories and other important or exciting announcements. So much goes on at McDaniel that without the content posted by these pages, there would be so much I didn’t know about McDaniel!

2. McDaniel Free Press / @mcdfreepress

You could say that the Free Press Facebook and Twitter are like a one-stop shop for all of the McDaniel and local news relevant to students. In addition to linking to their own stories, they share stories published by the College and local newspapers such as the Carroll County Times. They also retweet a lot of interesting and important things from other McDaniel Twitters.

3. McDaniel College Department of Campus Safety / @McDanielDoCS

It may seem boring at first to follow Campus Safety on Facebook and Twitter, but these guys use social media quite well. The weather updates and safety tips they post are pretty useful and helps show that Campus Safety really cares about us. Their Facebook page in particular is great because it shows a fun and human side to our Campus Safety officers.

4. McDaniel Athletics / @mcdanielsports

If you like sports, the McDaniel Athletics pages are for you! Get all the latest updates on Green Terror wins and our awesome student athletes! I think all of the individual sports have their own pages too, so if you’re only really interested in following swimming, for example, you’re covered!

5. Roger Casey / @DRROG

Our college president, Dr. Roger Casey, is the only thing on this list that you can’t ‘like’ on Facebook, but he would probably be flattered if you could. Instead, you can subscribe to him or even become his Facebook friend–and I’ve heard that if you become his friend, he’ll post on your wall on your birthday. Dr. Casey, or Dr. Rog as he likes to call himself is a pretty funny guy and he posts some interesting commentary. I definitely enjoy following him!

Homecoming on the Hill

On Saturday I started my morning by sitting at the front desk in the Admissions office talking to perspective students. I later ended my day hanging out in the green room of the theatre with my new friends that are McDaniel Alumni. One of the reasons I love Homecoming is because not only do you get to spend the day tailgating and cheering on the football team with your friends, but you also get to catch up with friends that have already graduated and meet even more new friends. When we say to prospective students that McDaniel really has a sense of community and family, we aren’t just saying that to get more people to come here. It is true. The connections I’ve made with people who are older than me connected right away over McDaniel traditions and stories that are passed down through the years. It is always fun to sit around and hear stories about past McDaniel experiences.
I truly believe that Homecoming gets better every year. It is only natural to make friends with people who are older than you and as sad as it is to realize that they won’t be there every day once they graduate, it’s awesome to know that they will be back on the Hill for Homecoming. I know personally, as a Junior, I made friends with people who were Seniors when I was a Freshman so I know a lot of alumni that I only get to see once a year. I love catching up with them and getting to know how the “real world” is treating them. It is going to be very strange for me next year if I can’t get off work to come back for it. Even though I’ll be working in Florida, I am going to try my best to make it back for Homecoming. My best friend is a Senior this year so I would be sure to see her here.
Notice I haven’t talked much about the actual football game. While we were ahead for a lot of it, we lost in the last few seconds. It was a sad defeat but because of our awesome tailgating skills, we made the most of it. One of my favorite parts about Homecoming is just walking around the bowl stadium and stopping at the different organization’s tents. Each Greek organization always has a tent and a bunch of other clubs set up camp as well. One of the best parts of McDaniel, in my opinion, is even though we have some groups that are selective, there are very few events that are strictly for members only. For the most part, we all work and play as one school and are a very inclusive group. I am always proud to say that I am a student at McDaniel College because not only am I getting a wonderful education in the classroom, but I am also making connections with my peers and professors that will last a lifetime.
