The Library Reference Desk

The semester has come for me to do my Senior Seminar, or culminating project for my major. For Communication, this means I perform my own study and back it up with lots of research. And that means lots of time in the library.

The Hoover Library is home to over 200,000 volumes of books. Combined with the Carroll County Library and the Carroll Community Library, that brings our total to about 700,000 volumes. And if that is not enough, we are partnered with the InterLibrary Loan System, which means we can get books from anywhere in the nation, given enough time, free of charge. Hoover Library also has 60 online databases that can be accessed from anywhere with your McDaniel log in.

With so many amazing resources, where would I possibly start?!

Thankfully, there is the Hoover Library Reference Desk. These are the people you come to whose job is to help you look up research for your project. You simply call or email to set up an appointment during their hours and arrive with your topic and what you want to research. The librarians can then help you find relevant research and help you find information on your topic.

Although this type of intensive researching isn’t always necessary, it is nice to know that the help is there and FREE when students need it. I am looking forward to my appointment and the information that I am going to get out of the meeting.

Best places to study on campus

We have midterms on campus this week, so everyone is looking for the perfect place to cram before exams. Personally, I have a hard time studying unless it is quiet around me. Over the years, I’ve sampled several places, and I’ve found a few that work really well for me:

The silent floor of the library

The perimeter of the L floor is lined with large desks that give you privacy from other students. I study here the most because there is such little opportunity for distraction. This floor also accomdates to groups, though, as there are two soundproof study rooms.

The balcony behind Academic Hall

I like to go there the most when it is nice outside or when it is dark outside and the football stadium lights are on. The balcony offers tables and chairs as well as a nice view of our athletic facilities. Studying outside is always calming, and I especially like writing papers on the balcony.

Harvey Stone Pavillion

Located at the top of the golf course hill, this pavillion is a bit of a walk from the dorms, but it is definitely worth it. In the middle of the pavillion is a fire pit, and it is surrounded by a circular seating area. While club meetings and other group events often occur here, it’s also nice to be there alone because the area is wooded and secluded.

However you like to study, it’s important to find the places that work for you. Our campus offers locations for groups and individuals, and it’s important to sample different areas to figure out which locations suit your studying style the best.

My 5 Favorite Changes on Campus

Every year I return to campus I am greeted with the familiarity of McDaniel College. However, there are always little improvements that make campus even better. This is my list of 5 of my favorite changes on campus this semester.

One Card

Upon starting the new school year, students were required to either get a new student ID or have their old card recoded. This new code allows students to log in online and have the ability to view their meal plan, declining balance, and miscellaneous other things, like gym trips. You can even chose to get notifications about when your balance is low or set a monthly deposit of money onto the card. It’s really convenient!

Convenience store

While replacing the Budapest Café with a brand new Green and Go convenience store has some students a little sour, I think the store is a great idea. Not only does it have quick grab and go food options like salads, sandwiches, and wraps, but it has a variety of snacks and granola bars. There is a milkshake-maker machine as well. The coolest part is it even has foods that you would normally need to leave campus to buy, such as eggs, milk, and fruits and vegetables. They don’t call it a convenience store for nothing!

New shuttle stops and hours

The shuttle was already awesome because it is free transportation for students. However, they recently expanded their list of stops to include Shady Grove, the metro stop that leads into DC. The shuttle continues to stop at Owings Mills, the metro stop for Baltimore, as well as all around Westminster. On top of these new stops, there are also expanded hours. The shuttle runs as late as 2 am on the weekends!

Expanded gym hours

The gym has always had really flexible hours, whether you enjoy working out really early in the morning or later at night. Recently they have expanded the hours so that the gym remains open later on Friday nights and opens earlier on Saturdays and Sundays. I like having the extra options because it means no excuses to get a workout in. And did I mention the gym is free to all McDaniel students?

24 hour library

Although this hasn’t officially happened yet, Hoover Library is set to have two 24-hour floors either by the end of the semester or by the beginning of spring semester. While they have always expanded their hours during important weeks, such as finals, having this 24-hour option is definitely going to be a great addition to campus.
