Death Penalty in the Middle East

The Middle East contines to practice the death penalty. Although their execution numbers fluctuate a lot. In 2020, the top four countries (excluding China which is believed to execute more than a thousand people per year) that execute criminals are Iran with 246+ executions, Egypt with 107+ executions, Iraq with 45+ executions, and Saudi Arabia with 27+ executions (Amnesty). The overall number of executions in the Middle East decreased by 25%, from 579 in 2019 to 437 in 2020 (Amnesty). While Saudi Arabia and Iraq’s recorded executions are dropping, Egypt’s execution numbers have increased from 32 in 2019 to 107 in 2020. And Iran’s execution numbers are still the most in the Middle East, their recorded number in 202o is 246 executions.  

Methods of execution:

  • Iran – Hanging 
  • Egypt – Hanging for civilian convictions or firing squad for military personnel convictions
  • Iraq – Hanging and firing squad
  • Saudi Arabia – Beheading with sword or firing squad
