Who’s that Girl? and Move-In Day

Danielle with a Police Box

The Doctor Who fan in the picture above would be me, Danielle, and is taken in one of my favorite places: Scotland, specifically Glasgow (although Glasgow isn’t my favorite place in Scotland). This is my first post this year, so I’m here to tell you a little bit about myself and about move-in.

I’m involved in a lot of things on campus, such as cross country, track and field, and the McDaniel Free Press, I’m in the Honors Program, and I’m an English major with writing and journalism & new media minors. More importantly, though, I spent the summer in Scotland–you’ll hear more about that as the semester goes on–enjoy watching Supernatural, Orange is the New Black, Outlander,  Doctor Who, and Sherlock, and have the honor of being a peer mentor this year for a class about the medieval supernatural, which means we get to read ghost stories, viking sagas, dream visions, and more.

I spend most of my time in class, at practice, in the dining hall, in the gym, or in my dorm.

Since I’m a peer mentor, I moved in early from training, giving me six days to transition from a summer semester to a fall one. It also means I got to help move the freshmen in on the first day of their orientation. It was a long four hours with lots of steps, but it was a lot of fun, and we were even joined by President Casey, who moved from dorm to dorm to help out.

Since then, all the upperclassmen have moved in, and it’s been wonderful to be back on a campus that’s alive with activity. I missed the random people playing the piano in Ensor Lounge, the way too loud chatter in Glar (our dining hall), and the fact that my friends are less than a five minute walk away. I’ve also missed my professor, my team, my classmates, and the random people on campus that make me smile when they do things like play bongos during a fire drill.

Basically, it’s good to be back.

That tall kid over there!

Anthony MorganHello, I am Anthony Morgan, currently enjoying my third year here on the Hill! I am hard to miss being as though there’s not that many tall kids on campus. How tall am I?–I’m 6’5″ to be exact.

I seem to be all around campus, whether it’s spending time with my fraternity brothers, of Phi Kappa Sigma, working in the athletics facilities, or even playing for the McDaniel Men’s Basketball team.

My major here at McDaniel is Political Science & International Studies. This is one of many great majors here at McDaniel, thus making my decision to choose a major that difficult. In the spring I will be doing Maryland  State Legislature with the political science department down in Annapolis, Md.

This third year at McDaniel seems to be very promising and I can’t wait to share it all with you, whether it’s updates of my social life, academic life, or athletics life. So in other words, get reading, I think you’ll enjoying hearing what “that tall kid” has to say.

Who’s that Blogger?

We are all back from summer break now, and although I have already introduced myself through my “Why McDaniel?” post, I would like to update you all on my life. I went to Costa Rica this summer, so there will most definitely be some blogs coming up about that. Due to the fact that I had such an awesome summer and beginning of the semester, many things have changed.

I am a junior this year, but I will be graduating early, so this is my last year at McDaniel, and my plan is to make the most of it. One of my new goals is to go to more sporting events and show my Green Terror pride!

I am doing my Senior Capstone this semester which should be interesting, considering the theme is Hispanic women. I am also taking two courses about language. In my Grammar and Usage class, I get a linguistics perspective of English while in my Minds and Language class, I get a philosophical perspective.

I have a new job as a Resident Assistant (RA) on campus, which has been tons of fun. I have a wonderful group of residents, so we get to talk and bond often. I am sure I will have plenty of stories about them as well.

All in all, this is shaping up to a fun semester, and I am so happy to be back at McDaniel.

Who am I? -Sarah Sackett

IMG_0006

Hello! My name is Sarah Sackett and I am a senior at McDaniel College. I started here as a first year student in 2011. I am a social work major and a Psychology and Interactive Theater double minor. I am the treasurer of the Canine Companions for Independence club a.k.a. Puppy Club, a member of the Anime club, and I am working on founding the Harry Potter club on campus.

Currently as a senior social work major, I am working at a social work placement 16 hours a week, at Second Chances in Westminster, Maryland. I help with their eBay store and working with clients. I also work at McDaniel’s Office of Student Engagement at the Rec Lounge.

I live in the affinity house for the Puppy Club, and because of that, I do various forms of community service and am in charge of planning an event a semester for the club. This semester’s event is our Cold Stone’s fundraiser. I also spend at least one of my evenings a week in the pool or the gym in order to get into shape.

I love it here at McDaniel College and I want to share a little about my experiences here and keep you informed about exciting events here on The Hill.

What’s in walking distance?

McDaniel College is a beautiful, self-contained campus, but that doesn’t mean it’s cut off from civilization!

While lots of McDaniel students have cars on campus, I would imagine that even more students on campus do not have cars with them. With a well-stocked dining hall, our Pub, Vocelli’s Pizza, and the Green and Go convenience store, food is never in short supply on the Hill, but sometimes, it’s necessary or fun for students to venture off campus to get even more food, pick up items they can’t find at the Green and Go or the bookstore, or even fill a prescription.

Different students have different ideas of what’s in walking distance from campus; some feel comfortable crossing 140, which opens up the opportunity to go to stores and restaurants such as Marshall’s, Old Navy, Michael’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Denny’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Panera. While these things are relatively close by, the idea of crossing that many lanes of traffic freaks me out, so if I go to these places, I go by car. However, here are some places I do feel comfortable walking to.

1. Rite Aid

I find Rite Aid the easiest drug store in town to get to. It’s barely any time on Pennsylvania Avenue followed by a somewhat quick trip down Monroe Street, finished off with a walk across the shopping center. Like any typical drugstore, you can find food, office supplies, and beauty and hygiene products, and you can fill prescriptions.

If you prefer Walgreens, that’s also in walking distance, though I’ve always felt that it’s a little more of a hike.

2. Baugher’s Restaurant

Baugher’s Restaurant is an offshoot of Baugher’s Orchards. When most students on campus talk about Baugher’s they mean the restaurant, and it is at this Westminster staple that you can get home-style meals, delicious homemade ice cream, and–wait for it–pie! They also have a farm market with baked goods, produce, and flowers for sale. I love buying apple cider here, and my mom loves it when I surprise her with the gift of Baugher’s apple butter (something I do about once a semester).

Baugher’s is always more fun with friends! I have more lovely Baugher’s memories than I could possibly describe here without losing focus of what this post is trying to be about.

3. Safeway

Still feel like walking? Further down the street from Baugher’s is Safeway, the grocery store in Westminster I feel most comfortable walking to. It’s open 24 hours, which is convenient, but if you’re going to be walking here, use good judgement; avoid going late at night (don’t forget that the Green and Go on campus is open extra late on weekends), and if you must go here during odd hours, don’t go alone.

Classico’s Pizzeria is also in this shopping center. It’s a great place to grab a slice or savor some Italian Wedding Soup.

4. IHOP

When I’m in Westminster, IHOP is my breakfast food restaurant of choice. The service is friendly and usually fast and the food is usually good. When I’ve walked here, I’ve usually gone with gobs of friends and later at night. However, now that I have a car on campus, I sometimes come here by myself right before embarking on my three-hour drive home for major breaks.

In the same vicinity, you’ll also find a Walgreens and a Cold Stone Creamery. Both the IHOP and the Cold Stone in Westminster are among off-campus locations that accept the McDaniel 1Card.

5. Downtown Westminster

Main Street borders campus and it’s home to all sorts of businesses, including small retail shops, bank branches, restaurants (try the Main Street Grille), and the Carroll Arts Center. The Carroll Arts Center screens foreign and independent films all the time, and every Easter season, they host the Westminster PEEPshow, an exhibit displays amazing Marshmallow Peep sculptures created by local families, classrooms, and organizations.
