Archery 101

Hey all! Ever since my freshmen year I have always seen the archery gym class taking place on the soccer fields and have always been jealous! Every year I tell myself that I will take that class at some point before I graduate. Well the time has come at last! And archery is as cool as it sounds. Each person gets a bow and and five arrows. I am one of the few that uses a lefty bow so I face the opposite direction as everyone else. Other than that, nothing is too different.

I love how our school offers these amazing gym classes! Where else would I learn to do archery? So far I have only had 2 classes, but they have been so much fun! Two of my good friends are also taking the class, which makes it ten times better! Plus, not gonna lie….I kinda feel like Katnis from the hunger games when I shot the arrows! Anyway, students should definitely take advantage of the gym classes offered here at McDaniel!

Hiring New Professors

Hi guys,

I’m not sure how other departments do it, but the political science department likes to get students involved with the process of hiring new teachers. Sadly, a few of our professors are retiring and moving on next year. Last Wednesday and Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend guest presentations given by candidates for our visiting professor position.

It was really exciting to meet potential professors. Both gave really interesting presentations; even though I was basically attending extra classes, I enjoyed myself so it was by no means a hardship. The attending students were given forms to fill out in order to provide feedback on the candidates. I really love how the department and the school administration takes into consideration the thoughts of students, since we will be the people who learn from the person who is hired and since we might notice things that the faculty might not.

Both candidates were really well qualified and I enjoyed their presentations, so I’m glad that I don’t have to make the tough hiring decisions!

Global Fellows Program

Hi guys,

Morgan mentioned the Global Fellows program in her post last week, and I am excited to say that I am one of the 28 first-year students that were welcomed into the program last Thursday.

The Class of 2017's Global Fellows.

The Class of 2017’s Global Fellows.

Any freshman can apply for the program regardless of major. The goal of the program is to help these students gain a better grasp on understanding global issues, to learn more about different cultures and be able to share these experiences, and to prepare them for lives in today’s increasingly global world. We’ll be expected to take at least five classes with international and multicultural focuses and to study abroad. I’m most excited to be able to be a part of preparing events and speakers that come to the College

At Thursday’s reception, each student introduced themselves with why they had decided to be a part of the program. I was really enthused by all the different responses I heard. One of the biggest reasons I’m really interested in international affairs is due to my fascination with stories. Everybody has a different perspective and a different story and these vary more and more if you look outside the world you know and into the global world.

I’m really excited to get to know my fellow Fellows and to further increase my global knowledge.

My Last Spring Fling

Spring Fling has always been a campus unifying event. Students of all ages join together and play cornhole and Frisbee, use blow-up games, and support our green terror teams. This Spring Fling was just that. The Quad, Red Square, and North Village of full of our student body hanging around and enjoying the weather. Luckily, the weather was perfect, so we all got a tan too! The Quad had fun things set up too….such as free tie dying, mix art with glasses, and blow-up games!

Our Green Terror teams did amazing too this weekend! Both our lacrosse games were home, which I attended, and they both won! I loved how majority of campus was out and about enjoying this event put on by the school! Spring Fling is always a memorable event and I will definitely miss it as an alumni.

GTS Spring Ball Tournament

Hello everyone!

Today was an unusual Sunday for me. Instead of a day full of homework, I had a day full of soccer! The Women’s soccer team had their spring ball tournament today at Goucher College. We played three 50 minute games against Catholic, Stevenson, and Goucher. I am happy to report that we won all three games! As a senior, who technically does not have to play spring ball, I was so glad to be out on the field with my team for one more game day. It was fun and the weather was beautiful!

The off season, a.k.a. spring ball for soccer, is much different than regular season. The team is only allowed about 16 practices with the coach there and only one day of games. Most sports teams also usually have an alumni game during their off season, where all the former players come back and challenge the current players. I know that for Women’s soccer, our spring ball is a lot of work. We do not only do the 16 practices. We are working out every day, either with our workout partners or getting the whole team together. The hard work definitely pays off though, and I think we showed that today with our three wins!

I hope everyone else had a great day and enjoyed the weather like I did! 🙂
