A Whole New World

CAM00192

I know that most people think it is really cheesy when someone says that McDaniel changes lives, but in all honesty, it really does. Almost everyday I see at least one way that this college has affected us as a McDaniel community. Whether it is through thought-provoking events or fun excursions off campus, we are continually growing as people.

On this note, one of those McDaniel changes lives moments happened yesterday. I was in the honors’ room when it hit me. On the board, someone had written a quote from Cervantes that said, “I know who I am, and who I may be, if I choose”.

First of all, this goes to show that we are being touched and moved by the things we learn in our classes; we have been so inspired that we cannot help but write on boards in order to share our excitement with others.

This quote is all about being who you want to be. No matter your circumstances, you can still succeed and achieve your dreams and goals. It is such a beautiful, inspirational idea.

Secondly, it shows me that the knowledge that I have gained from Great Works has also been instilled in the classes before and after me. We have a certain amount of mutual appreciation for these literary works.

To me, it creates camaraderie and promotes discussion and the sharing of ideas. We begin integrating this knowledge into our lives until it becomes a part of who we are and how we think.

So when I say McDaniel changes lives, it really does. It makes you a more open-minded, analytical, and passionate student. McDaniel opens your eyes to a whole new world.

My busy little week

I wasn’t on campus from Sunday evening through Monday evening, so I’ve had an exhausting time this week cramming all of my assignments, obligations, and activities into what time I was left with.

Academically, I’ve been working on keeping up with my reading and writing for my memoir writing class, having had to turn in a rough draft on Wednesday. However, I wrote that draft more last minute than I would have liked to because I had to give a group presentation for my Shakespeare class the day before the draft was due. The presentation, which analyzed themes and passages through close readings and critical perspectives, went really well. My group members and I worked hard to make sure it was packed with quality content, and we were rewarded with an excellent grade. We also used the assignment as an excuse to learn how to use Prezi.

In my linguistics class, we’ve be learning about speech acts and the exchange of speech between others, in addition to how other people perceive various features of speech, such as accents and dialects. On Thursday, we were assigned an 8 to 10 page paper due at the end of the semester in which we have to analyze the exchange of speech in a type of situation of our choosing. I decided that it would be interesting to look at speech that takes place during the question and answer sessions between lecturers and audience members at scholarly lectures. So last night, a mere hours after the paper was assigned, I attended a lecture given by Dr. David Ganz of King’s College London called “Early Medieval Terms for Scripts,” which talked about how various medieval thinkers viewed scripts, or different ways characters are written. While a lot of the lecture was over my head, I took enough quality notes of the question and answer portion of the lecture to bang out five pages of my paper.

While academics worked me hard this week, the McDaniel Free Press kept me somewhat busy but mostly entertained. Our editorial staff decided that we wanted to do an April Fools’ Day issue this year, so we did, and I spent a little more than half an hour on Tuesday distributing copies outside of Glar. I contributed three stories to the issue, which we named The McDaniel Funion in honor of The Onion. The story of mine that people most seemed to like was “First Year Student Accidentally Calls Professor ‘Mom.'” We put out a lot of funny content in this issue, and I’m so glad I was able to have a significant role in its success!

My week ended on a really positive note when I finally got to choose where on campus I live next year. I’m a rising senior, but since most of my friends (who aren’t graduating this year) are rising juniors, we weren’t able to get an on-campus apartment together. However, we got something even better. On Friday afternoon, the five of us participated in the substance-free housing lottery; the substance-free housing for this coming year is all going to be in campus houses, meaning that my friends and I will have a kitchen. I’m living in a substance-free house this year, and I’ve loved it. The house I’m living in now has a lot of character, and living in it has taught me a little bit about some of the responsibilities of having a house with a yard.

This week was an exhausting one for me, but things all turned out pretty well. Now I can breathe a huge sigh of relief knowing where I’m going to live next year and focus more of my energy on having fun and getting stuff done!

Some awesome off campus spots!

McDaniel has so many great things about it. I could sit here and make a long list as to why I came to McDaniel and everything I love about it. Instead I’m going to talk briefly about a few off campus places that I love.

First, I have already briefly mentioned  Birdie’s cafe on main st. I love Birdie’s for a few reasons. First, I LOVE coffee and let me tell you I LOVE a good latte. Birdie’s cafe not only has great latte but also some great food. The muffins never disappoint nor do the cookies or any of their bakery items. So, if your looking for a great cafe that’s not starbucks I suggest you try out Birdie’s.

Second, Papa Joe’s Mexican Restaurant. Being from Southern California I grew up eating Mexican food and let me tell you it is hard to not have it every day. Anyways, Papa Joe’s is a genuine Mexican Restaurant right here in Westminster MD, who knew?! I suggest taking parents or friends here when they come to visit. All of the food is awesome, especially their street tacos.

Third, J Cafe on main st. J Cafe is only open for breakfast and lunch but it has some of the best sandwiches I have ever had. J Cafe also has some great cupcakes for those of you with a sweet tooth. The soup and quiche at J Cafe are also delicious.

I could write about almost every restaurant on Main st. but I won’t. Instead, my advice is to try all the different restaurants and enjoy the family owned restaurants and cafes that are around.

Smart Talk!

Yesterday, McDaniel hosted a SmartTalk event. They brought in a CIA attorney who is a McDaniel Alumni! She spoke about her experience and how a liberal arts college shaped her into the person she is today. Niki Grandrimo graduated class of 98′ and has dedicated her life to protecting this country. She attended law school in Georgetown and has an impressive resume, all thanks to McDaniel.

Nike raved about her experience here at McDaniel. She said that by attending such a small school, she was able to gain great relationship with professors who supported her throughout her journey. She stated that she relates one of her professors as the North Star, that says something! She was taught to analyze every point of view, accept challenges out of her comfort zone, and fight for what is right.

I completely agreed with Niki’s speech. Comparing myself to the individual I was freshman year is mind blowing. I have grown so much through these past four years. All for the better. And it is all due to McDaniel. The small class sizes, relationships with professors, and the fact that it is a liberal arts school! McDaniel has shaped me into the person I am today, and has definitely prepared me for the real world.

Being Sick at School

Staying on top of your studies and work-load in college is tough stuff, and nothing makes this more difficult then getting sick.  It doesn’t take long for a virus to spread around campus when we all practically live and eat with each other.  We’re exposed to germs 24/7, and good hygiene can only help so much.

Just a few days ago, out of nowhere, I got a horrible fever and sore throat that pretty much kept me in bed for 48 hours.  Apparently there have been a decent amount of students or faculty members that have experienced the same symptoms recently.  Besides the fact that being sick is awful, being sick inevitably hurts academic performance…because, ya know, you can’t go to class or do any work.  Luckily for me, I recovered quickly and should be able to catch up on missed class-work.  It is assuring to know that McDaniel also has a great Wellness Center on campus where doctors and nurses are prepared to make you feel better ASAP.

Stay healthy and hygienic my friends!
