Death by Chocolate Night at Glar

An assortment of strawberries for dipping.

Hi there,

Every now and again, Glar, McDaniel’s dining hall, has a themed night. Tonight’s was Death by Chocolate night which, to no one’s surpise, is my absolute favourite. I may be a little bit of a chocoholic, and tonight I may have forgotten to eat dinner before I headed for dessert.

I was particularly pleased by the fresh strawberries, which made me feel like I was being at least a little bit healthy. Berries are my favourite fruits and they’re super expensive to buy even when in season, so it’s always a treat to have some at Glar. There was chocolate fondue-esque dipping sauce for them, as well as squares of pound cake and other fruits. (Though I must warn you–I love pineapple and I love chocolate, but I don’t recommend pineapple dipped in chocolate.) They had scrumptious cookies that were almost as good as something I could make at home as well as brownies and cakes.

Glar’s themed nights are always a good way to have a little more variety. They occasionally have “Dinner On Us” nights, which you have to preregister for, where they ask for your opinions on Glar’s food and if you have any recommendations, and they also have a box for comments and concerns. Apparently a lot of students want more Asian cuisine, so recently we’ve been having a lot of Asian cuisine nights. I often forget which themed nights are coming up, so it’s a pleasant surprise to see some unusual food. They’re also going to start serving smoothies at breakfast on Fridays, which may be enough motivation to get myself out of bed in time to go to breakfast!

Until later,

Speakers at the College: Dr. Telhami on the Middle East

Hey guys,

WP_20140327_001

McDaniel often brings speakers to campus to lecture on topics of interest. There are always a variety of topics, and I’d guestimate that there’s one every two weeks at minimum. On Tuesday, Dr Shibley Telhami, who teaches at the University of Maryland at College Park, came and gave a lecture. He has recently published a book called From Egypt to Syria, to the Arab Israeli Conflict: Understanding Tumult in the Middle East.

The entirety of McDaniel Lounge was packed, which was great to see, though some unlucky people had to stand. Dr. Telhami spoke for about an hour and touched upon some really interesting topics I hadn’t thought too much about before and some I had. He spoke about the huge influence of the information revolution and social media as well as how people form their identities and how fluid these identities are. I was particularly fascinated by the role public opinion plays even in countries ruled by dictatorships.

Dr. Telhami also does quite a bit of poll analysis, and he spoke about some interesting results he’d found. In the six Middle Eastern countries he surveyed, he found that many people said the most admired world figure was former French president, Jacques Chirac. As Chirac opposed the United States’ invasion of Iraq, he had been viewed in particularly good light, which shows how a lot of Middle Eastern people pay a lot of attention to foreign affairs.

It’s always great to have an outsider speak about interesting topics, and I’m looking forward to some of the upcoming ones, such as a lecture on Einstein’s legacy and a talk with a CIA attorney. You can find a list of upcoming events here.

Until later,
Ema

2 months left

This morning I woke up with a text from my mom reminding me that in exactly 2 months I will be graduating college. THIS IS TERRIFYING! I know what I want to do but I have no clue where I want to live which makes things a little bit more difficult.

Anyways, as promised I will be posting a few pictures from spring break! Some of the pictures are our ‘super selfies’ while others are just group pictures that random people took for us. Either way taking pictures is one of my favorite ways to remember the memories. My friends and I have already sat around and laughed about some of the things that happened over break.

Lastly I just wanted to talk about one of my favorite things, no matter where I am. I LOVE watching the sunset. No matter where I am I have to watch the sunset at least once. My favorite view of the sunset is over the ocean but I have found beauty in many other places. This picture above is from Jacksonville, Fl from spring break. I have also enjoyed watching the sunset here on the Hill. There is a big hill behind the baseball field which makes for an amazing place to watch the sunset. Also, from the gym is one of the pretties sunsets I have ever seen.

Until next time.

At the Movies!

Spring Break is officially over and everyone is back to their regular schedules. A lot of people returned with a tan…and those who did not are pretty jealous. But no worries, they’ll get tan soon cause warm weather is coming! One thing I love doing in these gorgeous weather is reading outside! I just finished reading Divergent, which was amazing. And since it is a trilogy I’m onto the next book!

But before I started the second book, I wanted to see the movie Divergent first, which is currently in theaters. Westminster has a great movie theatre located down the road…it is attached to the mall. The mall has a lot to offer. They have a number of stores, places to eat, and of course of the movie theatre! Anyway, my friends and I decided to go for a Matinée showing since it is cheaper! And let me just say….the movie was amazing! I would definitely recommend you go see it!:) It is similar to the Hunger Games, so if you were a fan of that…I think you would enjoy this story! It’s great having a movie theatre right down the road for times like this!

Creations in the Dining Hall

Glar has a lot of options for meals, but some days we McDaniel students like to spice it up and make our own creation.

For example, one of my favorite creations is combing granola, peanut butter, and apple butter! I call it Mush. There’s probably a real name for it…but I like Mush and it’s one of my favorite things to eat at glar! Another thing I love to make is toasted bread with peanut butter and banana! If you haven’t noticed…I love peanut butter!

Glar is a great place to get creative! My next idea is working with the panini maker! I’ll let you know how it works out!
