Spring Time on the Hill

Because I was on campus during break, I got to experience the first day of spring right here at McDaniel. I must say it was amazingly gorgeous. The birds were singing on my way to work. I was so happy that I even sang along. It was like a scene out of a Disney princess movie.

I saw so many beautiful birds (my favorite was the robin), and the squirrels were out playing. The morning was so fabulous that it made the rest of my day.  Nothing could bring me down after that.

Hopefully, we will get more days so that the rest of the semester will be just as fun. I am already ready for the picnics, playing in the park, and Spring Fling. WELCOME SPRING!

“Because I’m Happy” Spring Break 2014

Spring Break 2014 was a success! My friends and I survived the drive to and from Jacksonville, Florida! We went to the beach, toured around Florida, and enjoyed the warm weather! Sadly, we did not have all sunny days, but we did get to venture around St. Augustine, which is an awesome town filled with history!

But my favorite days would have to be the beach days! I love hearing the sound of the ocean and being able to relax and read for pleasure! I’ve been so busy with school work lately I have not read for pleasure for a couple months. I chose to read Divergent….such an amazing book! I definitely recommend it!

With all our traveling in the car, we had A LOT of time to listen to music, mostly the radio. And the kept hearing Pharrell Williams “Happy” song, so we decided to make it our Spring Break 2014 theme song! Hence the title;)

Oh, we did go see the sunrise at 6:30 in the morning on day…I know. It’s crazy. But totally worth it! The sky was so beautiful and I’ve never taken that many photos in a matter of minutes! Overall, my friends and I had a great Spring Break but I must say…it is good to be back on Hill! I missed it!

Spring Break 2014

Spring break is coming to an end which means I have class tomorrow. Although I love all of my classes and am really enjoying them this year, it is hard to go back after an amazing week in Florida.

This spring break, 4 of my friends and I packed up a car and drive 12 hours (it was supposed to be 10 1/2) to Hilton Head, South Carolina. Here we stopped and stayed with my grandfather for the night before making our way to Jacksonville, Florida. Once we left SC on Saturday we stopped in Savannah, Georgia, to celebrate St. Patrick’s day a few days early.  Savannah was beautiful and packed with people! Although it was quite an experience to be there, we jumped back in the car for 2 hours and made our way to Jacksonville.

Once in Jacksonville I introduced my friends to my aunt and uncle and one of my cousins and his wife. We enjoyed a home made dinner and enjoyed playing with my cousins 3 1/2 year old as well as his 2 year old.

The rest of the trip was spent either on the beach, relaxing inside while it rained, or exploring different areas of Jacksonville and St. Augustine. I could go on and on about each day but instead I’m just going to high light my favorite parts of the trip.

I really enjoyed walking about old town St. Augustine and leaving the history of it. We were able to see how people used to live and how they protected their land. Here we had lunch right by the water and enjoyed a great view with even better company. After we walked around the town for hours we sat on the beach for a couple of hours being going to visit one of my friends Aunts. She has a house in St. Augustine which we were able to see and visit with her at.

Another one of my favorite parts of the trip was all the pictures we took. I love the beach and could lay on the beach all day but being with friends and taking 1000s of pictures makes it that much better. Each day we took a ‘super selfie’ which was posted to instagram.

Other little things that made the trip were watching the sunset over a bay, getting up to watch the sunrise over the ocean, getting a tan, and of course being able to spend time with some of my family.

Although spring break is over I will always have these memories and can not wait to see what the rest of the semester has in store for me.

also, I will post pictures as soon as they are uploaded!

12 hours later…we’re back on the Hill!

The end of our trip was great, but now we are back on campus. Today is a busy day, full of catching up on homework, laundry, and life, so I will tell a more in depth spring break story later next week! If you remember last blog, I was kind of complaining about the Florida weather, but our last couple of days were so much better! We spent SO much time on the beach and under the sun, it was fantastic! We also watched the sunrise over the water one day, which was AMAZING. Yesterday, we ended up doing the full 12 hour drive back to school. It actually did not feel too long and boring, because I was in a car full of my best friends 🙂 We jammed to music and stopped for the occasional break, so it worked out.

Now we are back in Maryland, and the weather is not so warm anymore… we are actually supposed to get snow on Tuesday! I look forward to when it gets nice here because our campus is beautiful in the spring! I hope everyone else enjoys their spring breaks as much as I did! Like I said, I will have more to share later!

The Golf Course: A Forgotten Treasure

Hey guys,

One of my favourite parts about McDaniel is our golf course. It may seem exceedingly random for a college to have a nine-hole golf course, especially since our golf teams don’t even practice on them. I didn’t think too much of it at first, but over this spring break, I’ve fallen in love with it. Though there’s a busy road next to it, I’ve rarely encountered any other human walking, so it’s easy to pretend that I’m in the middle of nowhere in my own little world. There are also beautiful bunches of trees, which remind me of the woods in Yellowstone National Park.

In front of the bench, there are white and red pegs, which are apparently the ‘teeing ground.’

I didn’t realize quite how big it was when I first wandered onto it, but then I made it my mission to find all nine holes. (There’s probably some simple way to do this, but I don’t play golf, so I found it perfectly acceptable to walk around and see what I could find.) It’s actually really huge, and there are a bunch of random benches that you can sit on, and I think it’d be a great place for a picnic.

I’ve been watching the sunset here the past few nights, and it’s really strange for me. I’m used to the sun setting on the West Coast over the ocean. Since my parents live a block away from the beach, I’m used to running over to the beach and watching as the sun slowly drowns in the ocean. Here, however, you can watch the sun set multiple times from different vantage points in one night by starting off somewhere really low and moving higher. The golf course is really hilly, so I’ve been utilizing it to get the most out of the sunsets.

The sun setting through the trees.

The golf course is also the best place on campus for stargazing. It’s still a little chilly now, but it’s starting to warm up and if you take a blanket, it’s a beautiful place to lie and stare up at the sky and contemplate how small we really are. Though most of Westminster is relatively light polluted, the golf course is a tiny area of perfection in which you can pretend you’re in the middle of nowhere.
