On Wednesday, Jan. 15th at 3:30 p.m. the WordPress system will be unavailable to users while I.T. installs updates to the WordPress system and updates to numerous themes and plugins. The system update includes several design changes to the Dashboard and a new default theme called Twenty Fourteen.
What changes will I notice?
The system update includes a design refresh that aims for a more streamlined look and for improved readability for both desktop and mobile viewing. Also, when logging on to your site after the update, you’ll see new color scheme options on your profile page. These color schemes affect the look of the Dashboard area only—not the color scheme of any sites you may have set up.
Do I have to re-learn how to use the Dashboard?
No. Navigating your Dashboard is the same as before. Menus are still on the left and the blog and page editors still work the same way. If you use widgets, however, you now have two methods for adding them to your site. You can drag and drop available widgets to a widget area as before, or you can click the widget title and choose the widget area from a drop-down menu.
What is the default theme?
The default theme defines the “look and feel” of newly created sites. Once you’ve logged on to a new site for the first time, you can elect to change to a different theme or to keep the default. The new default theme, Twenty Fourteen, will apply automatically only to new sites that are created after the update on January 15th.

Most users will not notice any changes to their site. If you are using one of the themes listed below, however, check your site after the upgrade to make sure that no formatting corrections are needed. If you have customized your theme, it’s a good idea to document these changes before the upgrade.
