McDaniel College is situated in a small town, but if you ever need to get away to the city Baltimore and Washington D.C. are far from out of reach. I am a big fan of taking advantage of the opportunity McDaniel students have to explore both of these amazing cities. Owings Mills, about 25 minutes away from McD, and Shady Grove, about 45 minutes away, are two metro stops that will take you right into Baltimore or D.C., respectively. Just park your car and welcome yourself to the city!
I recently took advantage of this system last night with my friends! We used the Owings Mills metro to take us right into the Inner Harbor early in the evening. One of our friends had a happy hour at Howl at the Moon, a dueling piano bar, in the Power Plant Live attraction complex. This is a great experience since admission is free as well as the first two drinks – then they are 1/2 off! (Plus there is free food and chances to win more free drinks!) So for a college student this is a great deal! Happy hours are given away to McD students like crazy so almost every other weekend you have this opportunity to take advantage of.
Don’t have a car? Not a problem! McDaniel has a transport system called the Pickle – a big green van that shuttles students around in Westminster and to the two metro stops. They will drop you off and pick you up as late as 1:30AM (Owings Mills station) and 3:00 AM (Shady Grove station) on the weekends. Just give them a heads up and they will be at your service. It is kind of the ultimate designated driver. Also (a side note) any student can become certified to drive the pickle if they sign up and pass a driving test. So if you think you are capable of driving an 11 passenger van then you can become a pickle driver just like me! You will be the cool kid who can drive students to awesome off campus activities through organizations.
I always have fun at McDaniel on the weekends, but sometimes it is refreshing to go on an adventure to the city and have a great time with friends. Washington D.C. better be ready for when my friends and I go on our next adventure!
