Only at McDaniel

Do you ever have one of those moments where you realize that you are exactly where you are supposed to be? That moment came to me at the beginning of my sophomore year. Because I am a part of the Peer Mentor program, we came to school a week earlier than all of the freshman and that alone was just like having a big party with a group of awesome people. However, the fun started when the Class of 2017 came onto campus. Every class has its own vibe, and this class was simply amazing. We had tons of interesting people, but there was one experience that stood out to me and most likely to everyone else there as well.

Every freshman class has different speakers that come in during orientation. They are super funny, and they provide great presentations which help you think about the future and who you want to be. We had one speaker who was very empowering as she spoke about how everyone can accomplish great things. Somewhere along the line she had told us about her time in Bulgaria (she was in the Peace Corps I believe) where she picked up some Bulgarian. Towards the end, she said she would tell us a secret in Bulgarian, thinking that no one would understand her because it had never happened to her in other performances with other schools. Well as she said her Bulgarian and laughed afterwards, and we stared at her confused and bewildered, one boy stands up and responds to her. They have a two-minute Bulgarian conversation, and we all looked on in awe as she was proven incorrect. This is one of my favorite McDaniel moments because I literally had to say aloud “Only at McDaniel”. I knew that this is where I am meant to be. I feel lucky to be surrounded by such a cool eclectic group of people!
