Waves of Immigration
- Sixty Million Frenchmen Can’t Be Wrong, “The French Melting Pot”
- There is this paradox in France, that it is a nation built of immigrants, but even if you are an immigrant, you are only “French.” This New York Times article visits the opening of the National Center of the History of Immigration.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/17/arts/design/17abroad.html - Because of the waves of immigration, there are large minority populations in France. However, because of a general oppression and lack of opportunity, districts in cities–Paris in particular–became decrepit and contained high concentrations of immigrant populations and unemployment. These districts are called banlieues, which technically means ‘suburbs,’ but has become pejorative and effectively means slums dominated by immigrants. This article explains how these banlieues have become sources of national worry in France.
