General iPad Setup Instructions for McDaniel Campus Users
by Ed Holthause
Note: iOS 5 eliminates the need to tether your iPad to a specific computer. The exception to that is if you want to backup your iPad to a computer vs. iCloud. (See the article “iCloud vx. Wi-Fi Sync: Which does what?”.)
We suggest that you use your office computer to sync your iPad. If you want to use your home computer, you must remember to ONLY USE the computer you chose today. The iPad will dutifully sync with whatever PC (or Mac) you connect it to, but it cannot properly sync with two computers. You could lose important work, contacts, notes, and calendar events if you connect to more than one machine!
1. Your computer must have iTunes 10.2 or later installed. Every Faculty iMac or PC came with iTunes, but you may have ignored it until now. Check Applications on your Mac or Programs on your PC. If you haven’t ever used it, or it’s out of date, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download for the latest version.
2. Find the iTunes installer in your downloads folder and run it. When the installer is finished, launch iTunes.
3. You must also have an Apple ID. If you don’t have one, click on the iTunes Store on the left hand side of the screen, then click on “Sign In” on the upper right hand side of the screen. If you already have an Apple ID, skip to step 6.
4. Carefully progress through the screens to get to the “Provide Apple ID Details” page. This is where you set your Apple ID. You should use your McDaniel e-mail account name for your Apple ID. Please don’t use your McDaniel e-mail password—or any other website or bank account password. Create a new password and make it something complex. Apple will insist that you do.
5. On the next page, enter your Debit or Credit card numbers to pay for Apps, Music, Movies and Books you’ll buy. You can also buy an Apple gift card to cover your purchases, or choose to get only free stuff. With the account settings complete, log in to iTunes.
6. Connect your iPad to a USB port on your Mac or PC using the cable that came with the iPad.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions in iTunes to sync your iPad with music, video, and other content from your iTunes library, and with your contacts, calendars, and bookmarks on your computer. In the Set Up Your iPad screen, select “Automatically sync contacts, calendars and bookmarks” to have those items sync automatically when you connect your iPad to your computer.
Login to McDaniel Wi-Fi with Safari. The login page should appear immediately after you tap on the Safari icon If it doesn’t, tap the reload button at the end of the web address, or search for anything. A search will force the McDaniel Login page to load. Mobile users must login through the McDaniel wireless web page to use our WI-Fi. You’ll need to login to get e-mail or use web-surfing apps. You won’t need to do this with your iPad at home, but to login on campus, you must first launch Safari.
8. The Apple website should be an available choice and should appear briefly—to be replaced by the McDaniel login page. If not, tap on a bookmark, search with Google, or tap the circular arrow at the end of a web address to reload a page and be offered the login.
9. On the iPad Home screen, tap Settings. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then tap Add Account.
- Tap Microsoft Exchange.
- Enter your email address: yourname@mcdaniel.edu
- the server: mercury.campus.mcdaniel.edu
- the domain: campus
- your user name:
- your password:
- You might like to enter a handy description: McDaniel Exchange.
- Make sure “Use SSL” is ON. Tap Done.
10. Tap the home button to go home, then tap on Mail to check your settings. There are several error messages that can appear; reenter your password first, then check your entries against the text above.
Remember, you can’t check your e-mail until you’ve connected your iPad to McDaniel’s Wi-Fi (presuming you’re on campus). Make sure you can browse the web. Refer to step 8. The connection to the mail server can take a few moments.
When setting up your Microsoft Exchange account, tap the items you want to use on iPad: mail, contacts, and calendars. You can also set how many days of e-mail you want to sync to your iPad.
Downloading Apps
11. Tap the home button to go home, then tap on the App Store to “buy” an App. When the App Store loads, tap on the white search bar in the upper right hand corner and type “Zite.” When the list of iPad Apps appears, click on “Zite Personalized Magazine.” It’s free. Click on download to install it, then click on the home button. You should see Zite on the desktop with a blue horizontal bar processing across its icon. When the down-load is complete, tap on it. Explore your cool new magazine.
