The first iPad Q&A took place in the Maggie Lab over Fall Break. (And, yes, I was fussed at for choosing a date and time during the break. Won’t-do-that-again.) A few things became apparent almost immediately after everyone had arrived. People get enthusiastic when sharing their favorite things about the iPad. There is something for everyone and everyone has something valuable to share. And, while magazine and online reviews are useful, it’s incredibly helpful to see how someone we know is using a particular app, what workflow they’ve come up with, or what settings they’re using. Also, it was obvious that we needed a better room. More on that later.
We covered a variety of apps. Ed Holthause helped to demo a new app called togetherTALKS. (Disclaimer: If you have a tendency to be addicted to TED Talks, and you know who you are, it might be best to avoid this app.) Ed also shared information about a variety of other apps, including IMDb (great for movie buffs), Shazam (great for music lovers), the news app Zite (also a favorite of mine), SlideShark (awesome for PowerPoint users), Star Walk (astronomy guide), and Solar Walk (solar system model). The group shared keyboard shortcuts, search tips, and a review of how to make an app. Some discussion about iCloud back ups topped off the hour.
I admit to being slightly worried about filling the allotted time for this first gathering. That turned out not to be a problem at all. In fact, the hour flew by, and a quick poll of the group made it clear that we should meet again. As a result, there are two sessions are on the calendar for November 29th. The first will be from 11:30-12:30 and another session from 4:30-5:30 for those who cannot make the earlier time slot. And, as promised, I reserved a better (and bigger) room: Academic Hall, Room 205. If you missed the blurb in the campus announcements and haven’t already sent in an R.S.V.P., click here to access the Qualtrics form.
We’d love to have you join us.
