Fun with Campus Safety

Last night, the RAs from ANW and Blanche Ward Halls hosted an event in the Forum titled “Fun with Campus Safety” for the campus community to attend.

McDaniel’s campus safety officers can seem pretty intimidating. They’re usually all suited up and act very professional. However, they’re all actually super friendly and really helpful. They know a lot about campus and are only a phone call away if you need escorted at night or anything. I have a part-time job right next to their office, so I know most of the officers. We planned this event to give all students an opportunity to interact with some of the officers they might see around without really talking to.3

Campus safety officers provided drunk goggles, which are glasses that make your vision wonky. We had cornhole set up, and students had a lot of fun playing drunk cornhole. A few baseball players were especially distraught that it took them several tries to get the sack through the hole in the board! Watching people try to walk in a straight line was also highly entertaining.2

They also had an “Intoxiclock” which had a list of common drinks and allowed students to calculate their blood alcohol content after a certain amount of drinks and how long it would take for the alcohol to leave their system. In addition to being entertaining, this was really educating. I certainly hadn’t known that some single drinks had about three times the amount of alcohol found in a standard drink. The officers facilitated this, giving them an opportunity to get to know students in a relaxed manner.

We also made mocktails with fresh fruit–strawberry daiquiris and pina coladas. I’m glad they were non-alcoholic, because I had at least four of them–they were delicious! To top everything off, we had popcorn and cotton candy.
