Man Tending his Plants

Man Tending his Plants

Pictured above  is an iron wrought painting framed with dark wood with a green border. The painting is of what seems to be a rural man sitting on a bench, and tending to some flowers. There is a short colophon within the upper left hand corner, and a small seal in the lower right. Although large empty space is used within the paining, it is used here to represent the grass that the bench and the man is on, and the sky in the background.

As the subject of the painting, a man, is tending to flowers, this painting is quite interesting as it seems to redefine gender norms and expectations. China has an extensive history of gender relations and expectations, and throughout that history, floral care arrangement has stereotypically been a task or hobby attributed to women. It is for this reason that a depiction of a man indulging in an activity historically thought to be strictly feminine is so striking, because it marks a cultural and social change in gender roles and expectations.
