Tiehua in the Forbidden City (mingqing jiaju 2) 5

This tiehua piece by Tang Peng is a prime example of the art form during the Kangxi Period within the Qing Dynasty. This work, following the bird and flower style, dates back to the 1680s, and has been preserved in the Palace Museum in Beijing. While this tiehua piece is primarily decorative, it is speculated that pieces framed in this nature could have been used as screens. In terms of subject, this piece is demonstrates a reaction by the literati to the political situation of the time. The recent Qing takeover of China and the traditionally Taoist idea of withdrawing oneself from the corrupted secular world are seen most significantly. Additionally, in older tiehua style, the depiction focuses on one central element, plants and various birds in this case. Notice the large amount of white silk background and the detailed foreground.
