Time Management and Scheduling

Time management is a key word thrown around in school, work, during interviews, and is a keyword in every aspect of life today.   I don’t know exactly how younger education in China was structured, but from what I saw the lifestyle of college students from the two universities we were in contact with, Anhui Polytechnic and Anhui Normal University, the schedules of students were very rigid and structured. From my conversations with students from both universities, students had short morning schedules where they had to eat and prepare for their day before morning classes began. After their day classes, they had after-class clubs and organizations or some time to exercise on the track or basketball courts before eating again and returning to their dorms. Females had to be back before 11:00 pm and males had to return to their dorms before 11:30 pm. In addition to this, all students had to be accounted for by student representatives, or RA equivalents in the US, else the whole dormitory would be in trouble. In addition to this, professors were also made aware if students missed clubs or curfews during their time at the university. This is very different from McDaniel’s campus rules. Most teachers have attendance policies but professors are not as involved with the students in regards to dormitory life and regulations. In addition, the dorms on campus have no curfew or time restrictions on when students are to report back to dorms. The atmosphere on campuses in the US, and on McDaniel College’s campus specifically, are much more relaxed and require the student to maintain his or her personal schedule and time accordingly. In China, certain guidelines are in place to help steer a student in the right direction and help waste less time. Don’t get me wrong, one can still access the internet, talk on QQ, or hang out with friends back in their dorm, but trips outside campus for example were prohibited to college students in China whereas in the US this is not the case. One thing I will have to do more research on is if the students have the 11:00 and 11:30 pm curfews on the weekend as they have during the weekdays. I will have to look into this more.
