1. The student team will produce a documentary entitled “The Evolution of Ownership in Tiehua Industry: Capitalism with Chinese Characteristics (1992-2014).” This 20-30 minute documentary will highlight the evolution of three enterprises and the lives of the local tiehua Each student will design interview questions, assist with photos and videos, and select documents and collections related to our specific research focus, which will then be used for the production of this documentary
  1. The student team will create a website with an attached blog featuring students’ interaction with local community and collaboration with the local college students. Each student will compose five posts about these themes:
  • Our initial arrival and first encounter with local community and local cultures;
  • Building connections with our college counterparts and to understand Chinese higher education from a comparative perspective;
  • Communication with tiehua workers about their working conditions and factory experiences;
  • Challenges such as “being lost in translation”;
  • Review of our overall experience and how to connect to our future plans.
  1. The student fellows will compile a photo album entitled “Human Faces of Tiehua Industry” in both physical and electronic formats, exploring the workers’ factory life, and providing a visual reference for later study. All students will participate in filming and/or photography while in China.
  1. Aaron will use interviews to prepare a paper on the working conditions in the tiehua He will compare and contrast current Chinese practice with industrial working conditions during the 19th century and in pre-revolutionary China of the 1920s and 1930s.
  2.   Andrew and Carly will use the information they collect in China in their departmental and Honors program research papers; these projects will be jointly supervised by Drs. Fang and McIntyre. Andrew’s project will focus on the development of and changes in the tiehua market structure since the early 1990s.
