This work, completed in the 1920s-1930s is perhaps one of the last major works before years of wars destabilized China and left the arts on the backburner. Even more, this is one of the final pieces of the Republic of China under the Nationalist Party, which was increasingly modernized, yet full of conflicts. Tiehua artists were threatened (and still are) by the prospect of an industrialized China and had to adjust accordingly. The combination of handmade and machine-made elements demonstrates a unique combination of tiehua of the time. In this example, it is suspected that the figure and the donkey could have been pressed in an iron-cutting machine, which would save time, but limit the handmade nature of the work. Nonetheless, this piece has some more traditional characteristics similar to the works of Tang Peng, such as the simple trees and open background. During this era, it was very common to imitate the old elements of Peng. By mixing the new, industrialized China and old China, this reflects a transition in tiehua production.
