116 What is Valium and what are its’ effects? Valium is used to treat anxiety, alcohol withdraw and seizures. it can also be used to help with muscle spasms and sedation. The side effects include Drowsiness, dizziness, being lethargic.

The more dangerous side effects are agitation, impaired vision, speech and hearing depression, fever, sore throat and memory problems.

115 Who are the Stowe family, and what book written by them is being referenced The Stowe family is the family of Harriet Beecher Stowe. she was born on June 14th 1811 in Litchfield Connecticut. She was one of thirteen children.

 118 Corps de Ballet This is a reference to the way that the girls who were with Ms. Swille and Mammie Barracuda and how they swarmed out in a formation after her. Corps de ballet is a group of dancers who work together as backdrop dancers to the lead dancer. Examples of this include scenes from Black Swan. They work as a unit, never separate.

 

117 Who is Jeanette MacDonald?  Jeanette MacDonald was singer/actress born June 18, 1903 and died of an heart attack on January 14, 1965. She was used as a reference because of Mammy Barracuda making Ms Swille look pretty she is saying that “When we finish with you, you gon put Jeanette MacDonald to shame” (117)  This is to say that her appearance and actions would be greater than that of the prominent Jeanette MacDonald.  118 Pickaninnes  This is a racial slur. This refers to darker skinned African children. This is used in North America. Originated in the south during antebellum times. Robin Bernstein gave three qualifiers for this 1) juvenile 2) of color 3) resistant if not immune to pain these three show the dehumanizing nature and impact of the imagery used in the caricature
