Chapter 20

Page Term Description
127 “He flogged Queen Victoria.”   There isn’t any known information regarding Queen Victoria being flogged, but during her reign the most common punishment for soldiers in the British military was flogging.
127 Lord Gladstone Sir John Gladstone was a Scottish slave-trader and member of Parliament who was the father of British Prime Minister William Gladstone. Gladstone was known as one of the world’s largest slave owners, owning over 2000 slaves by the 1820s.

After the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, a law that abolished slavery in the United Kingdom, Gladstone reportedly got rid of his African slaves and bought numerous Indians to be his indentured servants. Gladstone gave the servants promises of health care and education, which soon turned out to be false. The servants were forced to work with no pay, and Gladstone was able to continue slavery on more legal terms.

127 Marquis de Sade  Marquis de Sade was a French nobleman and writer who was well known for his perverse sexual preferences, causing the term “sadism” to become popular.

127 “The Sadists have about captured the Crown. They’re all over the world, whipping people in the name of England. Whipping. Screaming. Beating people for the Queen.”  This quote may be an metaphor for British imperialism and slavery, what with the Sadists (Swille) whipping people (Africans) in the name of England.
